Lutter & Wegner Celebrates 215 Years with an Exclusive Anniversary Menu

When talking about Berlin institutions, there’s one name you simply can’t ignore: Lutter & Wegner. Ever since I started writing about Berlin’s restaurant scene over 20 years ago, this spot on Gendarmenmarkt has always been a rock-solid fixture. While trends came and went, they remained true to their German-Austrian tradition here.

This year, there’s a damn good reason to head to Charlottenstraße 56: Lutter & Wegner is celebrating its 215th anniversary. A place founded in 1811 that’s still among the city’s top spots today has definitely done something right. I went there for you and tried the anniversary menu.

The Ambience: A Piece of Contemporary History

When you step into Lutter & Wegner, you immediately leave the hustle and bustle of Mitte behind. The wood-paneled walls, the tall arched windows, and the carefully curated Berlin art create an atmosphere I call “bourgeois serenity.” It’s chic, yes, but never stuffy. Here, a relaxed lunch feels just as right as a glamorous dinner after an evening at the Konzerthaus.

The Anniversary Menu: A Culinary Journey

For €59, you currently get a 3-course menu that perfectly reflects the restaurant’s strengths. Here’s my experience:

The Start: Sparkling Tradition

We start with a glass of Lutter & Wegner Riesling Sekt. For those who didn’t know: the house is said to have first popularized the term “Sekt” in Germany (thanks to the actor Ludwig Devrient). A lively, elegant start that leaves you wanting more.

The appetizer: Savory meets fruity

Pan-seared chicken liver on a Rapunzel salad with cranberry vinaigrette and chili walnuts.

The liver was cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. A particularly clever touch: the heat of the chili walnuts cuts through the sweetness of the cranberries. This is Berlin on a plate: down-to-earth, but with that certain kick.

The Main Course: Nobility Obliges (and So Does the Asparagus)

Here, the kitchen team showcases all its skill. The meatballs are fluffy and delicately seasoned. For a traditional Berlin establishment, sourcing the asparagus from Beelitz is a matter of honor. The truffled gnocchi give this classic a modern, luxurious touch without overloading the dish. A true comfort meal at the highest level.

Dessert: Light, airy, local

Berliner Luft Lutter & Wegner

Berliner Luft: a light, fluffy dessert cream inspired by Lutter & Wegner, featuring rhubarb.

Not to be confused with the liqueur of the same name! This dessert is an institution in its own right. The cream is as light as the name suggests, and the rhubarb provides the perfect touch of tartness to finish it off. A dessert you can still manage even when you’re already full.

215 years is quite a statement

Lutter & Wegner manages to bridge the gap between 1811 and 2026 without seeming outdated. The anniversary menu is a fantastic offering for anyone who wants to experience classic Berlin cuisine with a Viennese twist in one of the city’s most beautiful settings.

The wine list, with over 750 selections, is a particular highlight for wine lovers like me, and it’s always a reason to linger a little longer.
