From Work Stress to Evening Relaxation: Cannabis in Everyday Life
The workday is over, but the tension lingers. Your body is at home, but your mind is still at work. More and more people in Europe are turning to cannabinoids to switch from work mode to relaxation mode, and this trend has a scientific basis. Since the German Cannabis Act (CanG) took effect on April 1, 2024, consumption by adults has been legalized under certain conditions, including possession and private use in limited quantities. In cities like Berlin, additional restrictions apply, such as bans on consumption near schools, playgrounds, or in certain public areas (like parts of Görlitzer Park) which makes use more heavily regulated and context-dependent. We’ll look at how cannabinoids interact with the body’s stress mechanisms, why the dose determines the effect, and which cannabinoid is suitable for which time of day.
The Body’s Internal Anti-Stress System
The body contains the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors distributed throughout the body. It controls the stress response by regulating the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. When the system functions normally, the body experiences stress but is not overwhelmed by it. If the body’s endogenous endocannabinoid levels drop, the ability to recover from stress also decreases.
Cannabinoids from the cannabis plant interact with the same receptors as the body’s own endocannabinoids. However, the result depends less on the compound and more on the dose. A study by the University of Illinois at Chicago found a distinct biphasic effect of THC. Participants who received 7.5 mg of THC before a stress test reported significantly lower anxiety levels than the placebo group. However, those who received 12.5 mg of the same compound experienced the opposite: increasing anxiety and paranoia. Less is more effective: This finding refutes the widespread notion that “more means stronger.”
Which Cannabinoid Is Suitable for Which Occasion
Different cannabinoids have different effects, making it possible to tailor their use to specific times of day. CBD alleviates anxiety without causing psychoactive effects. A study by the University of Colorado has confirmed that, unlike THC, CBD reduces anxiety regardless of the dosage. Consciousness remains clear, and cognitive functions are not impaired. An option for everyday stress—before an important appointment or after a stressful phone call.
THC in microdoses (7–10 mg) acts as a way to unwind in the evening. Mild euphoria, muscle relaxation, and a slowing of thoughts without loss of control. Microdosing cannabinoids has become a significant trend: According to UCSD, search queries on the topic of cannabis microdosing increased by 1,250% from 2015 to 2023.
CBN has a specific effect on sleep. A clinical study from 2023 showed that 20 mg of CBN reduces the frequency of nighttime awakenings compared to a placebo. The combination of CBD and CBN enhances the effect. It alleviates anxiety while also improving the ability to fall asleep.
Why the form matters
The method of administration influences not only the speed at which the effects set in, but also their nature. The same cannabinoid provides a genuinely different experience in different forms.
- Vape. Effects kick in after 8–15 minutes and last 2–4 hours. The vapor enters the bloodstream directly through the lungs, with each breath delivering a small dose—making it the ideal format for microdosing.
- Edibles (gummies, oils, capsules). Effects kick in after 1.5–2 hours and last 4–8 hours. The liver converts THC into 11-OH-THC—a more psychoactive metabolite—which is why the intensity is higher even at the same dose.
- Smoking. Rapid onset, comparable to vaping, but the dosage is harder to control and the risk to the respiratory tract is higher due to combustion toxins.
A vape is best suited for evening microdosing—thanks to the rapid feedback effect. To support sleep during the night—edible forms containing CBN.
Limits and Responsibility
Cannabinoids are a substance with limitations. THC can be harmful to people with pre-existing mental health conditions (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), which is why CBD is the safer choice in these cases. Combining it with alcohol can amplify the effects in unpredictable ways. Signs of healthy use include: a day without use is pleasant, the dose does not increase over time, and work and relationships remain unaffected. A negative answer to any of these questions is a signal to reconsider your approach.
There is also a legal context to consider. Since April 2024, adults in Germany have been permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public places and up to 50 grams at home. The Cannabis Act (CanG) has established the legal framework for this. At the same time, the law prohibits driving a vehicle after consuming psychoactive cannabinoids. Legal sources with laboratory certificates are becoming the market standard.
A Mindful Evening
Cannabis in everyday life—it’s not about the question “to use or not to use?” The biphasic effect of THC, the differences between cannabinoids, and the role of the method of administration shift the focus away from an abstract “relaxing after work” toward a concrete, controlled process. A mindful approach means understanding the processes in the body and choosing a product with a transparent composition.
