Where to put your backpack when you are a budget tourist looking for the typical Berlin, authentic, a bit historical but still a bit alternative and above all far away from other tourists? Answer: in Prenzlauer Berg!

Home to Berlin's oldest Biergarten as well as the famous Mauerpark and its flea market, with its pretty typical Berlin cafés and old breweries, Prenzlauer Berg is one of the most popular and pleasant districts of the German capital. Check out our selection of the 10 best hostels in Prenzlauer Berg that will allow you to live in Berlin (almost) like a real Berliner!

1. Pfefferbett: a hostel in a former brewery

Occupying a former 19th-century brewery, the Pfefferbett is ideally located just a short walk from the U2 Senefelderplatz underground station and close to bars, restaurants and cafés. The rooms offer views of the garden or the inner courtyard. Snacks are available throughout the day, and in summer you can relax on the south-facing terrace or play billiards and table tennis.  In winter you can enjoy a drink by the fireplace - the bar serves a nice selection of homemade rum. The hostel also has single rooms for 1 or 2 people.

Address: Christinenstraße 18-19, 10119 Berlin
Bike rental (12€/day) / free tea and coffee station in the lounge / WIFI in some rooms
Price: 14€ in a dormitory

2. Anna Banana hotel (formerly Alcatraz)

Formerly known as the Alcatraz Hotel, the youth hostel has everything a backpacker could wish for for a great stay in Berlin: inexpensive, well-connected to public transport (only a few minutes' walk from the underground U2 Eberswalder Str.), clean, individually furnished, fully equipped kitchen, and indoor and outdoor communal areas that encourage socialising. Anna Banana Hotel is located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg with its cafés, bars and restaurants, but also close to the Mauerpark, a popular flea market for tourists and locals alike - ideal for finding nice souvenirs.

Address: Schönhauser Allee 133A, 10437 Berlin
Price: 14€ in a dormitory

3. East Seven: a hostel close to Kastanienallee

The youth hostel is conveniently located directly below Senefelderplatz, just 15 minutes' walk from Alexanderplatz station and right next to the Kastanienallee. The hostel is housed in a simple, almost family-friendly building. A kitchen is available for your convenience and a continental breakfast is served between 7:30 and 12:30 every day (at an additional charge). Men and women benefit from separate shared bathrooms. The hostel also has a very nice terrace with a private garden which is used as a barbecue area in the summer. Enjoy the energy of the area from the comfort of your hammock.

Price: 20€ dormitory (max. 8 beds) / 40€ private room
Hammock / Terrace and garden
Address: Schwedter Straße 7, Prenzlauer Berg

4. Lette'm sleep: a youth hostel in front of a small garden

The youth hostel offers several dormitories as well as private apartments - all located in a 19th-century building on the pretty Helmholtzplatz. The staff are very attentive and have lived in Berlin for many years, so they are happy to share their knowledge about what to do in this lively cultural city. All major tourist attractions are easily accessible by all types of public transport: underground, trams and buses are all within walking distance of the hostel.

Price: 14€ dormitory / 61€ private room
Address: Lettestrasse 7, 10437 Berlin

5.Central Hostel: a cheap hostel north of Prenzlauer Berg

Located in a quiet alleyway, the hostel has a simple and modern decoration.  The hostel is located in the north of Prenzlauer Berg, a little bit out of the way, but the S-Bahn and tram station Greifswalder Straße is only 5 minutes walk away and will take you to Kollwitzplatz and the heart of Prenzlauer Berg in a few minutes (and all the cafés and restaurants) . Meet other travellers in the communal kitchen or lounge.

Address: Naugarder Str. 7, 10409 Berlin
Price: 14€ in a dormitory

6. Meininger: an ideally located hostel

The 7-storey building is located in the heart of the Prenzlauer Berg district, right in front of the hostel, at the Senefelderplatz underground station (U2). In order to make you feel completely independent, Meininger offers you a guided walking tour of the city centre on arrival and provides you with a common lounge, bar and kitchen.

Address: Schönhauser Allee 19, 10435 Berlin
Guided tour of the centre / free use of the safe and luggage room / bar
Price: 16€ dormitory / 83€ private room

7. Generator: the cheapest hostel in Prenzlauer Berg

The Generator chain is a definite success with backpackers all over the world and for good reason: cheap, sleek and modern design, good international atmosphere and above all the concept adapts to the premises. Here, the hostel serves typical Berlin dishes at community dinners (ideal for meetings) such as Currywurst or Schnitzel! The common lounge provides table football and billiards. The hostel bar serves cocktails to be enjoyed comfortably seated in a deckchair. The only drawback is the location (not much nearby but the tram or S-Bahn station is less than a minute's walk away).

Address: Storkower Str. 160, 10407 Berlin
Bike rental / bar
Price: 10€ dormitory / 55€ private room

8. Inn-Berlin: a youth hostel with a friendly atmosphere

The INN-BERLIN seduces by its friendly atmosphere and the paintings of the Chilean artist Francisco Perez. The hostel offers the same services as a hotel but at hostel prices. The personal atmosphere will make you feel at home. Upon arrival, guests receive extensive information about Berlin - public transport, sightseeing, shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Located between Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding, Inn-Berlin is just outside the Ring Road. Take it if you can't find anything else or if prices compensate for the location.

Price: 13€ dormitory (max. 4 beds) / € private room
Address:  Prinzenallee 48/49, Berlin

9. Corner Hostel: a simple and comfortable youth hostel

Aptly named, the hostel is "just around the corner" - situated in the north of Prenzlauer Berg, in a relatively quiet location, you'll need to walk a little and then take the tram to the centre of the area. As far as the decoration is concerned, the furniture is modern and basic, but has a thematic decoration depending on the room - however very sober. The hostel also has a shared kitchen.

Price: 20€ dormitory (max. 8 beds) / 40€ private room
Mixed and exclusively female dormitories
Address: Driesener Str.17, 10439 Berlin

10. Hotel Big mama: a hostel with private beach

Slightly off-centre, Big Mama offers all kinds of accommodation: apartment, single room, dormitory for 4 or 6 people (enough to meet lots of people from different backgrounds and for different purposes) and the service is very good - service as in a hotel (cleanliness, staff very available) but in the relaxed atmosphere of a youth hostel (activities, happy hours, games, ...). The rooms are clean and decorated in a modern style. Taking advantage of being slightly out of the city, the establishment has even set up a small private beach. However, you are still 600 metres from the Osloer Straße U-Bahn station, which provides direct access to Berlin city centre in 10 minutes. Bars and restaurants are less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Price: 20€ dormitory (max. 6 beds) / 40€ private room
Bike rental (10€/day) / Terrace / private beach / bar
Address: Koloniestrasse 24, Mitte, 13359 Berlin
