Record Tourism in Berlin

Since 2023, Berlin has once again been recording visitor numbers that are nearly at historic levels. The capital has recovered surprisingly quickly from the slumps of the pandemic years and is now almost back to the levels seen in the record-breaking years before 2020. A key reason for this lies not only in new attractions or events, but also in the way travel is planned today.

Digital booking channels, comparison sites, and online content have fundamentally transformed the practical aspects of travel planning. Anyone organizing a city trip to Berlin today does so almost exclusively online—from the initial inspiration to checking in at the hotel.

Why Berlin Set New Visitor Records in 2025

The official tourism figures for 2025 clearly show the direction in which the city has developed. Berlin recorded approximately 29.4 million overnight stays by 12.4 million guests in more than 700 lodging establishments. With these figures, the capital reaffirms its position as one of Europe’s leading city travel destinations.

A clear upward trend was already evident in 2023: Around 12.1 million visitors came to Berlin, an increase of 16 percent over the previous year. Particularly noteworthy is the high proportion of international guests, which stood at about 40 percent. These figures illustrate that Berlin is perceived as an attractive travel destination not only nationally but also globally—and international guests typically book their trips almost exclusively online.

Digital Booking Platforms Are Fundamentally Changing Travel Decisions

This shift is particularly evident in the way accommodations are booked. Trips involving at least one overnight stay are now booked exclusively online in 63 percent of cases. Another 8 percent use a mix of traditional and digital channels.

This trend has long since expanded beyond traditional hotel bookings. Restaurant review platforms clearly list cuisine, price, and opening hours side by side. Event portals filter concerts, museums, and tours by date and budget. Mobility apps compare public transit, taxis, and bike rentals in real time. For travelers to Berlin, the growing variety of platforms means one thing above all: price and location comparisons for accommodations can be made in just a few clicks, including filters for neighborhood, public transit access, and cancellation policies.

Online Reviews and Social Media Drive Visitor Flows

In addition to the actual booking process, preliminary research is playing an increasingly important role. According to a survey, 88 percent of German consumers use online booking portals as their first port of call for travel planning, as evidenced by survey data on travel planning. Only 11 percent still book in person through a traditional travel agency.

Reviews and photos on these platforms directly influence which accommodations or activities in Berlin are even considered. A well-maintained online profile with authentic user reviews can make all the difference for smaller providers in Berlin. Visibility on digital channels has thus become a prerequisite for participating in the city’s tourism growth.

Digital Leisure Offerings Complement the Traditional Berlin Experience

Even on the ground, the travel experience is noticeably changing thanks to digital tools. Public transit apps, digital museum tickets with time slots, and map services make it much easier for travelers to plan their own itineraries. Travelers can reduce wait times and organize their schedules more flexibly, which is a real advantage, especially on tightly packed city trips.

The economic significance of this development can also be expressed in numbers. According to a recent study on tourism as an economic factor, the tourism sector in Berlin supported approximately 224,800 jobs and generated gross value added of 8.4 billion euros. These figures show that the digital transformation of travel planning is no longer a marginal phenomenon, but rather a key economic factor for the capital. Anyone traveling to Berlin today does so with a smartphone in hand—and the city has adapted to this reality.
