Mexican Street Food in Berlin-Mitte at Taco & Gringo
Anyone looking for authentic Mexican cuisine in Berlin often ends up having to settle for compromises. All too often, authenticity is watered down to suit European tastes. Not so at Rosenthaler Straße 63: Here, Taco & Gringo has created a space that excitingly combines culinary precision, a vibrant lifestyle, and deep-rooted family tradition.
As soon as you step inside, you feel a carefree, modern energy. The design features bold shades of pink that harmonize stylishly with Mexican design elements. The highlight in the summer is undoubtedly the spacious, sun-drenched terrace—including a table with built-in swing seats that simply guarantees a good mood. But behind the cool vibe lies genuine culinary substance. Founder Carlos Hernandez Toimil hails from Oaxaca, the culinary heart of Mexico, and brings his family’s original recipes straight to Berlin-Mitte.
Authentic Mexican cuisine based on old family recipes
The concept is fully rooted in South American sharing culture: Each dish is served in three bite-sized portions—perfect for sampling your way through the menu with friends. And what comes out of the kitchen here is a testament to genuine craftsmanship. All dishes and sauces are homemade. Particularly impressive is the Salsa Taquera Toimil, made from roasted chilies according to a closely guarded family recipe, which lends the dishes a wonderful, smoky depth.
During our visit, we had the chance to sample the menu’s signature dishes:
- Tacos de Camaron: Our absolute favorite of the day. Tender freshwater shrimp, perfectly marinated and freshly grilled on the plancha, served in three aromatic corn tortillas. Enhanced with fresh lime and a perfectly balanced blend of spices, this combination is a true rarity and highlight in Berlin’s dining scene.
- Tacos de Birria: A prime example of Mexican soul food. The tender pulled beef literally melts in your mouth and is perfectly complemented by the cebollitas endiabladas (red onions marinated in habanero) and fresh cilantro. The highlight: the steaming, deeply flavorful consommé for dipping the tacos.
- Tacos de Pollo: Unpretentious, incredibly juicy, and packed with authentic flavor.

The restaurant also offers vegan options: Plant-based alternatives are by no means neglected here. The vegan tacos, made with marinated pea protein (Planted Pulled Meat), impress with their fantastic texture and rich, toasty flavors from the plancha.
What unites all the tacos is the masterful seasoning. The heat is noticeable and present, yet it remains pleasantly complex and never overpowers the delicate flavors of the main ingredients.
From Churros to Margaritas: The Perfect Evening Experience
The grand finale was a true dessert highlight: churros that were wonderfully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, served with creamy dulce de leche, offering just the right amount of sweetness.
Whether for a relaxed, sunny lunch on the terrace or an atmospheric evening with friends—Taco & Gringo delivers across the board. By the time the lights come on in the evening and the top-notch, freshly mixed margaritas start making their way across the bar, the place transforms into one of the best spots in the neighborhood for a fun get-together. A culinary home run for Berlin!
